Watch a recorded session

Play back what a visitor did: the timeline and its markers, rage clicks, console errors and failed requests, speed, and links to a moment.

A session recording shows what a real visitor saw and did on your site: the pages, their scrolling and clicks, what they typed (with private fields masked) and what went wrong along the way. You need the Watch session recordings and people live permission.

What a recording is

  • One recording follows one browser tab. It carries on as the visitor moves between pages of your site in that tab, and a new one starts after 30 minutes without activity.
  • A recording shows Recording while it is still going on, and Finished after.
  • Only real people are recorded: coview waits for a person's first interaction and skips bots. What is masked or left out is described in Privacy, masking and retention.

Open a recording

  • Sessions in the sidebar lists every recording, newest first. Click a row to play it. See Find the sessions you need.
  • A customer's profile, and the visitor panel in the inbox, list that person's recordings.
  • A ticket shows the session that came with it under What happened; click Watch it.
  • On Home, people clicking without result right now are listed with a Watch link.

The player

The top of the page names the visitor and shows when the visit started, how long it lasted, how many pages it covered and the device. The buttons there:

  • Watch live, while the recording is still going on. See Live now and watching a visitor.
  • Their sessions: every recording of this visitor.
  • Conversation #…, when the visitor chatted during the visit.
  • Delete, if your role may delete people and their data.

Under the page, the controls are Play / Pause, the playback time, the speed (1×, 2×, 4× or 8×), Skip inactivity (on by default, so quiet stretches pass quickly), Copy link and full screen.

The timeline

The bar under the player is the whole visit. Drag along it to move, or click a marker to jump straight to that moment:

MarkerWhat it shows
Page viewThe visitor opened a page, including navigation inside a single-page app.
ClickSmall dots along the top of the bar.
Rage clickThree or more fast clicks on the same spot: often a button that doesn't work.
Chat messageA message from the visitor or from your team.
EventOne of your own events, sent with coview('track', …).
ErrorAn error the browser logged, or a request that failed: no answer, or a server error.

Clicking a rage click or an error starts playback two seconds before it, so you see what led up to it. Hover a marker to read its details, such as the error message or the address and status of the failed request.

Errors and failed requests are kept even when they happened while the page was loading, before the recording started. Request bodies and headers are never kept. Your workspace can turn this off in Settings › Privacy under Browser console and network.

About the visitor

The Visitor panel beside the player gathers what coview knows:

  • Location: country and city (from the visitor's IP address, or approximately from their time zone), the network, and their local time.
  • Device: device type, system, browser, screen and viewport size, and light or dark mode.
  • This visit: the traffic source, referrer, campaign, landing page, start time, clicks and the pages in order.
  • Person: email, phone, user id and tags for an identified visitor, and their other activity.

Share a moment

Pause where you want to point a colleague, then click Copy link. The link opens the recording at that moment for anyone in your workspace who may watch recordings.

What you won't see

  • Passwords, payment card fields and anything your site marks private show as masked.
  • coview's own chat widget is recorded with its text hidden: you see the visitor open the chat and type, never what they write. The conversation itself is in the inbox.
  • Opening a recording is written to the audit log.
